When To Book Your Wedding Photographer

When planning a wedding there are so many important decisions that need to be made. I know that the list might seem daunting at first, but know that it will all work out! To help ease your mind I have put together a comprehensive list on when to book your wedding photographer! First things first, you should have your wedding date and venue secured before booking any vendors. After that there really isn’t a right or wrong answer!

BOOK THE VENDORS THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU FIRST

With the seeming never ending options for vendors and wedding ideas this varies from couple to couple, and it isn’t always photography (even if that is what I sometimes wish it would be). All couples are different and you should prioritize finding vendors that you couldn't imagine getting married without. A good/bad vendor can make or break your dream wedding if it isn't what you thought it would be like. So take your time choosing what is most important for your big day. Sometimes that may be the band or catering... or even photography! What’s most important to you? That should be on the top of your checklist.

BOOK VENDORS THAT CAN ONLY TAKE ONE EVENT PER DAY

Keep in mind, some wedding vendors are only able to take one event per day unless they have a large team or do not need to be on-site for your event. For example, I can only photograph one wedding at a time and I do not accept additional bookings on wedding days. Other vendors, such as a baker or florists, are usually able to book more than one event per day. As a photographer my weekends quickly start to fill up with weddings, and I unfortunately have to turn away potential clients when I have something already booked. To avoid that possibility it is important to reach out to your preferred photographer and see if they are available on your wedding date with a good amount of notice.

POPULAR DATES AND HOLIDAY WEEKENDS BOOK THE QUICKEST

Wedding season is a real thing! Popular dates and holiday weekends book quickly. In my experience the most popular months for weddings are April, June, September, October, and November. December weddings have also been very popular the past two years. If your wedding day falls during these months, I recommend booking your vendors as soon as you are able.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED:

A lot of wedding clients book around eight to twelve months before their wedding date. I sometimes book weddings up to eighteen months in advance. I’ve also booked weddings that are only a few weeks away from their wedding date. Here in Utah short engagements are pretty common and you have to act fast to make sure you have everything in line for your day!

There truly is no right or wrong answer so prioritize what is the most important to you! If you stick to that then there is no reason to worry about the endless list of things you need to do before your wedding. And if you are in the Utah or Ohio area please message me so I can help you check off one more thing on your checklist!
